Social Bookmarking
Diigo is a great information management tool that allows you to collect and organize your bookmarks, highlights, notes, pictures, screenshots, etc. to share anywhere, anytime.
Reflection
Today I learned all about social bookmarking and what that actually means. This is incredibly exciting because up until now I was used to bookmarking on my specific computer, in one specific browser. What a pain that was! And look how far we have come with sites like Diigo and Delicious. I focused on using Diigo because it was pointed out during class that more middle school students and teachers use it over Delicious. I love how you can not only bookmark sites in Diigo, but also annotate information, categorize resources, and highlight text in shared groups. I also love how Diigo will keep me organized through the use of tags. I believe this will greatly enhance learning because it will cut down on wasting time by scrolling through pages and pages of bookmarks.
Research begins with a question. We can help our students by supplying them with big questions; however, we also need to supply them with the resource tools to answer those questions. When we build resources alongside our students, we encourage them to dig deeper into a subject area. Diigo is an incredibly powerful research tool because it promotes collaboration among teachers and students. For me, Diigo has tremendous value in the classroom because of that collaboration factor. I think it would take 1-2 class periods to delve into social bookmarking and how to use sites like Diigo. However, once students get it, I am sure they would find it to be an invaluable tool in school and in life. They will also be able to use it across all subject areas.
Social bookmarking falls into two categories in Bloom's Taxonomy. The first is remembering because bookmarking specific sites will enable me to refer to them later. The second category that social bookmarking demonstrates is the analysis level of Bloom's Taxonomy because students need to be able to understand and analyze the content of a page in order to tag it.
